No new roller on the Abyssinian-usually there is a new one half way up the one opening...end of the world scenario or is this beotch getting ready to flower??? I really would have thought it would get WAY bigger before it flowered-we'll see. Never seen it just take a break but it sure deserves one!

| I dont know alot about tropical plants and I am wondering what that is and if its cold hardy. I like the looks of it. :) |
| Hunter it's looks like a Ensete maurelii(Red Abyssinian Banana.)From what i've read there cold hardy to zone 8. Randy |
| Not sure if I have ever heard of one flowering that got dug up every year. Maybe it's just the weather. Keep an eye on the pseudostm and keep us informed if she starts to flower. |
| Usually on Banana plants(which this is not...)you see a "flag" leaf and a nice bulge moving up the trunk- so far I see neither...the latest leaf is absolutely massive- very possible it's reloading. Shouldn't take long to find out as the weather is quite warm(-: |
| It's just like a Sago palm,it's not really a palm at all. It's a Cycad,(cycas revoluta)is the most common one.The Red Abyssinian Banana is a false banana,it looks like a red and green leaf banana but it's not a banana. It's a Musaceae ensete ventricosum. Randy |

| wow Jim, how awesome! I can't imagine the looks you get and the conversations your yard must start! Impressive my man! |
| Thanks.... I looked at it last night at mid-night and it hadn't changed a bit. When I went out this morning the leaf had opened completely I have no idea how it did this as fast as it did! I'll try and get a picture today! |

| Pretty sure what happened was this: THe new leaf coming out was rolled up inside the edge of the leaf that was 2/3rds unfurled. Once that leaf finished unfurling, the new leaf was able to push up more (it was probably at least 1/2 way up already) and unfurl some once it was released by the roll of the previous leaf. I have seen this happen on my bananas quite a few times. The first time I saw it I thought the same thing that this thing was going nuts growing, but really it was that the new leaf was hidden inside of the partially unfurled leaf that was already there. I know because I looked. I manually unfurled the rest of a leaf and found the new leaf inside of the part that was still rolled up, hiding in there from view. That probably explains that seeming spectacular growth in just 1 day. Aswesome Abyssinian! |

| I agree with Novaplantguy, that has happened to my bananas a lot. Im glad that your banana is still growing well and fast! Looking forward to seeing some bloom pics from it pretty soon!! -Alex |
| Yea.... it was inside for sure but for an Abyssinian to bust out like that was truly spectacular, they are not an easy one to gauge growth on like a regular(true)Banana plant. No matter how far up the roller it was, what it did in just 10 THEY ARE AMAZING SOMETIMES! |

| Yeah, those Abyssinians are NUTS. sometimes mine was even faster than my Basjoo, which is saying something. Sometimes it was damn near a full leaf out ever 24 hours, which to me is insane growth. Testament to their growth, and to the person who can get them to grow like that! Congrats! |
| Thanks! They are usually working on several leaves at a time- |

| Hey Jim, Notice something thats missing from the forums now? And perhaps someone? (evil grin) hehehe..... Make sure you stand FAR back btw... those things can get 25+ feet! (at least here). In their native habitat they can get up to 50 feet! WOW! |
| Yep,I have to stand back just to look at it! BTW I was typing a response when that thread disappeared- Remember jaspar???-LOL |

| How could I forget? LOL! Yeah I'm guilty with having it disappear. I thought it had run its course and everyone here had basically gotten the idea about his business from his posts. It had turned into one big advertisement thread for him so it was time for it to go. In stead of offering solid facts to refute anything, he was just in self agrandizing and self promotion mode. Also quite the preacher too it seemed. All things that are not really appropriate here. I had a red abyssinian a few years ago. It was in a pot. A BIG pot, but a pot. That thing got probably 17 feet tall, in a POT! The leaves were enormous. |
