I could be wrong but it looks like it may already have them. It seems like the needles are plastered to the trunk when they are new but start to jut out and become more dangerous as time goes by.

PS, yours looks like it needs a little pruning. Just those completely brown and dried up leaves.

Careful what you wish for. One of mine harpooned my thumb earlier this summer.

I had to transplant one to a sunny spot. Before I touched that thing I was sure to cut every needle off. No second time needed to learn that lesson. Two out of three have needles, but I really like the look without them.
