Areca Vestiaria

I just got a new 1 gallon Areca Vestaria today via E-bay. It looks awesome!! I haven't transplanted it yet. i have to get another pot. It was shipped bare rooted wrapped in peat moss so it should be OK for a day or two. I was wondering if anyone knows what type of soil this species likes? Well draining of course but do they also like it sandy? Also do you plant it with the stilts still showing or should they be beneath the soil line?

Great palm. Did you get the red or orange form? Definitely well draining soil so yes, put some sand in it. Don't let it stay dry for too long though. As far as the aerial roots go (I'm surprised they are showing these at that stage) don't bury them, just plant as usual with the area where the roots (not the stilt roots) meet the stem just barely under the soil. Also, usually grown in a shady area. Hope this helps.

Well guys here it is! I just transplanted it this morning. I can't beleive how healthy it looks. Usually when I get a mail order palm it is half dead when I get it. cft nursery has always shipped me nice looking plants though. The e-bay seller piouspalms did me justice on this areca. Nicest plant I ever got and only $10.00!!!

Nice palm and piouspalms is a good person to deal with. I bought a Tahina spectabilis from him and he sent me two. He is a good guy and he has some nice small palms. Yours is more the green leaf form but very beautiful.I posted this before but this one is a more red leaf type.

Here's my two, both from 15 gallon cans and both triples. The left one I got around 3 years ago when they suddenly became popular down here. It grew in a terra cotta pot on our patio for two years and went in the ground last fall. It's a red/orange hybrid and it's on the north side of the garden, lots of afternoon sun.

The right one went in the ground this past winter, deep, deep shade. Again, a hybrid between the red and the orange.

Nice pics! It makes me want one more than ever. jasgar/topher2006-as far as shipping to Canada, MB palms doesnt and I checked out realpamtrees.com and they dont have any areca vestiari's to ship. I am sure eventually someone will. There are a few guys on ebay that i bought plants from but nobody that sells palms.

Unfortunatly it looks like I will lose the smallest frond. It is yellowing up bad. Transplant shock I guess. I have had it in full shade and no fertilizer since transplanting but I guess theres nothing I can do to save it. The rest of the palm still looks great though just that one frond is dying. Oh well.

It is best to give them root starter when you first get them.It probably will be ok.

RE: Areca Vestiaria

That's normal don't worry about it. As david says a good root starter doesn't hurt !
