Some people push zones, you just jump about 4 of them. Love seeing what you grow and how you protect them. Can't wait to see this thing when it gets really big.

Trunk girth increasing in size will definitely help with cold hardiness and protecting the heart of the palm. Nice job! Do you till the soil in the spring around the palm? Also, I'm curious, what kind of soil do you naturally have? I have clay unfortunately here in Michigan.

Hi again islandbreeze. Yes, I till the soil around the palm in Spring, by hand. The soil is typical garden soil for our area. It's a mixture of clay and sandy loam. Since Washingtonias are native to the arid southwest, our somewhat alkaline soil out west here seems to suit them just fine. My 15' Trachy, Mediterranean Fan Palm, Pindo palm and new Blue Mexican Fan Palm (Hesper) seem to like this soil as well.

What variety is your Washingtonia? Filifera, Robusta or the hybrid Filibusta?
