Farmers' Almanac Predicts 'Bitterly Cold' Winter

EWISTON, Maine (AP) - The Farmers' Almanac is using words like "piercing cold," ''bitterly cold" and "biting cold" to describe the upcoming winter. And if its predictions are right, the first outdoor Super Bowl in years will be a messy "Storm Bowl."

The 197-year-old publication that hits newsstands Monday predicts a winter storm will hit the Northeast around the time the Super Bowl is played at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands in New Jersey. It also predicts a colder-than-normal winter for two-thirds of the country and heavy snowfall in the Midwest, Great Lakes and New England.

"We're using a very strong four-letter word to describe this winter, which is C-O-L-D. It's going to be very cold," said Sandi Duncan, managing editor.

Based on planetary positions, sunspots and lunar cycles, the almanac's secret formula is largely unchanged since founder David Young published the first almanac in 1818.

Modern scientists don't put much stock in sunspots or tidal action, but the almanac says its forecasts used by readers to plan weddings and plant gardens are correct about 80 percent of the time.

Last year, the forecast called for cold weather for the eastern and central U.S. with milder temperatures west of the Great Lakes. It started just the opposite but ended up that way.

Caleb Weatherbee, the publication's elusive prognosticator, said he was off by only a couple of days on two of the season's biggest storms: a February blizzard that paralyzed the Northeast with 3 feet of snow in some places and a sloppy storm the day before spring's arrival that buried parts of New England.

Readers who put stock in the almanac's forecasts may do well to stock up on long johns, especially if they're lucky enough to get tickets to the Super Bowl on Feb. 2. The first Super Bowl held outdoors in a cold-weather environment could be both super cold and super messy, with a big storm due Feb. 1 to 3, the almanac says.

Said Duncan: "It really looks like the Super Bowl may be the Storm Bowl."

The Maine-based Farmers' Almanac, not to be confused with the New Hampshire-based Old Farmer's Almanac, which will be published next month, features a mix of corny jokes, gardening tips, nostalgia and home remedies, like feeding carrots to dogs to help with bad breath and using mashed bananas to soothe dry, cracked skin in the winter.

Also in this year's edition, editor Peter Geiger is leading a campaign to get people to ditch the penny, like Canada is doing.

Past campaigns have focused on moving Thanksgiving to harvest time in October, reconsidering "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the national anthem and changing the color of money. This time, Geiger thinks he has a winner.

He wants people to donate pennies to charity and then lobby Congress to stop making them.

"They don't get used very much. They get tossed. The only real use of a penny is if you save tens of thousands of them, then you can use them to help someone," he said.

Last year the Farmer's Almanac called for a 'Cold and Wet' winter for here in Florida. It was so very wrong.

Also, the penny has a couple of pretty darned good uses in my opinion. When my kids ask for a penny to toss into the Water Fountains, I have no problem. If they start asking for nickels, dimes and quarters... well... they better start getting their wishes! Plus the older pennies, the ones with copper, help to control the algae a bit in my bird baths. They don't stop it, but it takes the algae longer to form in my experiences.

    Are they ever right....?

They say they are but I have not seen it.

But hey, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The Farmers Almanac weather predictions are for entertainment as far as I am concerned...long range forecasts have been off by so much lately too...they kept saying it would be warm/mild in spring but winter really never ended and now summer is up to the same thing.

Yet some how they claim to be 80% correct. lol I wonder if the NFL was using the almanac's predictions when planning the 60 foot ice slide come Super Bowl XLVIII.

On a related note...... I'm still scratching my head on the above average hurricane season that was predicted. Hmmm. Perhaps the experts were wrong... again?

7thLegend, expecting 60 degrees and sunny here for the Superbowl.
    LOL!

Not as cold in February as it used to be though. We will see.

Don't place much belief in the Farmer's Almanac. Do they ever predict anything but cold and snowy for the Northeast in February?!

As for the hurricane forecast, this certainly has been a very, very strange season! Was expected to very bad, but abnormally quiet! Probably one of he strangest seasons I can remember. Don't know what to make of it.--May be a very late season. Like X-Mas storms?! We had ours late last year--October 31st, name of Sandy.

Njoasis 7 that is true! How can you mess up snowy/cold northeast prediction for Feb? At some point it will be snowy and cold. lol

You know another interesting thing to throw in the mix is thus far the Nation is setting a record for fewest amount of 100 degree + temps for a summer season.

I know it has been cool Summer in the southeast, not been a real hot season in the Northeast either. Who knows what will follow?! Think it will be a warmth to hot Fall though. Hurricane season? Haven't got a clue at this point!

Being curious, I dug this 5 month old post out and read it again. I think they got this one right, but we will see about the Super Bowl. January's duration of cold has been relentless. Can't wait till February!

I remembered reading this post when you posted it and have been thinking about it for the last couple of days...They definitely got this one right, spot on. It's kind of eerie and gives you a new respect for the almanac.

At the rate we've been getting snow in Michigan (the snowiest January on record and supposed to get more tomorrow, not to mention 5th coldest), I would not be surprised at all if NJ gets a snow storm just in time for the Super Bowl. I just hope this winter lets up soon to an early spring.

Islandbreeze it looks like this week will be no different, a lot more snow expected and you might smash some records this winter. Crazy! January is going out with a bang. Going to take weeks just to thaw out.

I haven't had any extreme colds here but our normal temps have been below average most of the month with several nights in the 30s. However I see some 70s in my forecast so maybe we're turning the corner. I'm ready for Spring.
