Why is it planted in sand if you don't mind me asking? I think many people assume that because most Phoenix species are from very arid areas, that they like don't need much water. But even those that grow in the driest areas of the world have roots that tap into ground water of their oasis. Pygmy dates are much more tropical than most Phoenix--being from Southeast Asia, they LOVE water! Mine is containerized but doing unbelievably well in this current summer/fall monsoon season. Maybe your soil is too sandy and not holding enough moisture. Maybe you should amend the soil some by adding humus. Maybe also excessive Texas heat for this species that's more tropical than desert.

I'm on North Padre Island and we are on sand. They get plenty of water. I've checked below the surface and it is staying moist. They did well for 6 year or so, but the last year seems to have seen them go into decline. We have had very little rain this year and it's been very hot and windy, but until the yellowing starts, they've been green and vibrant. Thanks.
