I think having it under grow lights next to a furnace would be much better than in a cold garage, the dry air from the furnace shouldnt harm it since there natural habitat is in a desert.

i have numerous filfera and robusta seedlings that i have kept inside over winter. I just put them by a window and they do ok.

My Filibustas have done fine the last 2 years/winters indoors.
Dry air is not an issue but do give them the south window.

Washys are one palm that benefits from being over potted

Thanks everybody. It will be kept in my basement under grow lights if I do decide to overwinter it indoors. The other, sprouted at the same time, is noticeably larger, and will be overwintered in the garage. Several years ago, i used to have a robusta that I overwintered in the garage for about 5 years, and it did fine, grew nicely, until one spring I put it out too early and it rotted, so a Filifera should have no problems under the same conditions, so long as I keep it out of cold wet weather until things warm up. As for the Filifera, I am curious to see how well it does under nothing but grow lights and mid 60 degree temperatures.

They won't move much until the temps gets above the magical 70F mark
inside in winter...generally.Bananas are similar in that regard.

Interesting that you say that Jim...I have never had luck with bananas indoors, I always thought it was the dry air from the furnace, but maybe it was also because I always keep temps in the mid to upper 60s, a little too cool for them to grow then...

They don't do anything inside for me either,
only in spring when the house starts warming into
the 70s again will they move.
I just try to get them through the winter!

Just watch out for mites. They love the dry indoor conditions, and can get out of control fast. I've found that a thorough coating of Wilt-pruf top and bottom of all surfaces really helps with mite issues, I guess it suffocates them, or just sticks them down so they can't move and eventually die.
