You can refer to thread "washingtonias and coconuts at HD" for a pic. Again, purchased for $9.95. Has a clump of 3 growing. Next Spring I'm going to plant in the ground near my large trachy, since, in doing some research, I see that chinese fans have proven rather hardy in the past for some folks. My question is, should I seperate one of the plants when I put it in the ground, or just leave as is and seperate when it matures some. My plan was to take 1 of the 3 off and pot up the other 2. Will all be done next Spring, probably early April.

I looked at the thread and it doesn't seem to have those stiff cold tolerant palm leaves you see with washingtonians and trackys. I may be wrong, move forward with you plan. If you leave them out on cold still nites in the 20s and they survive; they may be cold hardy.

I would try and see if you can get a good cut. You may have to move them apart a little just to see if they are growing into each other. Sometimes the roots arent too grown into each other, and other times they are.

Good luck!

Also you may want to get some root stimulator if you do cut them because they are going to have to regrow their roots for sure.

They might actually look cool left together like that and they would be easier to protect-
If your going to try them outside in spring you MAY want to seperate them now.
Try putting the roots in a large tub of water(with root stimulater in it,like superthrive) and let the soil fall away then gently start to pull them apart a little at a time.
Once they are seperated let them sit in the superthrive solution for a few hours,then pot up and water with same or fresh batch of superthrive or some other rooting hormone solution.Keep the roots warm if you can,inside the house would be fine(-;

That particular palm is leaf hardy to MAYBE low 20s at best.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies. I've never used Superthrive, but will try in the future. The beach is roughly a mile away, and this buffers our temps just a little bit. My windmill has never had a problem, even with minimal protection the last two years. I understand it is a much hardier palm species... but I'm willing to give this chinese fan a shot, especially considering its inexpensive cost. Here are a couple of pics:

Get pics and nice tracky! Jim had a good suggestion to leave them together to increase cold hardiness. Years ago, I am pretty sure I had a palm like that and never protected it and left it in a pot outside and it did not make it. So leaving them together and giving them that great nook in your yard with winter protection and Christmas lights may do the trick.
