Adventure with a Pony Tail Palm

I have one that is at least 30 years old. It has been a single stalk all its life and I have always wondered how to propagate it.

In fall of 2012, I left it out on the porch just a bit too late in the fall and it "survived" a hard chill. It lost most of its palms but I nursed it back with warmth and lighting. Later that spring, I noted some bumps on the stem and now they are all growing into new plants.

My question is: How old to these growths have to be to cut and root to new plants? Can I do this now or wait another year? Many more years? Maybe I will experiment with one this winter....
