Ch. humilis / CA planting advice needed

I don't frequent this particular forum, but when I need advice I know to come here.
So I have a Chamaerops humilis that is presently in a 15 inch square planting box I made out of redwood. I have had this plant for 7 or 8 years. It is getting pretty big for the box. I think I bought it at HD for 12 or 15 bucks. I now wish to plant it in the ground. I have a strip of land between my front lawn and the street. The strip is 20 feet wide, more or less. Clay soil. Full sun. I'm in the Bay Area of CA so temps down into the 20s is unusual.
Sound like a good planting area?
Also, would now be an acceptable time to plant or would Spring be better? Or does it make no difference?
I appreciate any advice or counsel from you experts! Cheers! |

| I agree with Mike, these are pretty hardy and your zone (especially at this time of year--fall) is one of the mildest in the country. Also right before the rainy season begins so good for root growth. --Go for it! PS., Be sure to wear gloves when transplanting these! |

| You will probably be having a very mild winter out on the west coast (by the water I wouldnt be surprised if temps dont fall below 30). You can plant it whenever you want. For those of us planting palms that have to go through very extreme temps (for a palm at least) during the winter months, we plant early in the sping but these palms are bullet proof in california and cold tolerant to at least 15 degreesF. Good luck! |

I was successful with minimum problems. The soil had been amended some years back so digging was a snap. The planting box came apart easily. The soil level was perfect on the first try of plopping the palm into the hole. Did shed some blood from a cut on the forearm and my right wrist is a little sore, but all in all, it went very well. Looks quite tropical! |

| Used to live in the Bay Area (sigh), where gardening is relatively easy and everything seems to grow like weeds, even with neglect. Had Ch. humilis, T. acanthocoma, and W. Robustas in our yard there. Have planted those same species here, and while they look pretty good, they don't seem to grow as fast. |
