Okay what have you bought recently that you really didn't need? I was in HD yesterday and they had they had these gorgeous Queen palms for $30.00--about eight feet plus tall with a thick trunk. I already have two of these (about the same size). They all will get overwintered eventually in a loft garage. I couldn't believe I was buying them--especially at this time of the year but I could NOT pass up the value.

I do it on a weekly basis. This week I bought a licuala orbicularis, a licuala grandis, a Carnegiea gigantea, a Verschafeltia seychelles, and an Encephalartos horridus. Ebay is evil and Im addicted to buy it now :P

Well, there's a coincidence--I just bought an ebay Saguaro as well! I only do buy it now as I don't have the patience for bidding only to loose out by a few cents. So far, I have not been successful with Licuala. My most successful ebay exotic has been Prichardia hildibrandi that now has massive leaves--as easy, if not easier than Chinese fans. Far from being evil, I always say--and on the seventh day God created eBay! Happy shopping.

Ebay!!!! And to think their was a time when I thought ebay didnt have EVERYTHING. Ive got alot of nice rare plants on ebay. Without ebay I would be paying 200 dollars for a pindo palm and 100 dollars for a single windmill palm. Last year I saw a small triple trunked windmill palm at a local nursury and I was like "Wow, I cant believe they are selling windmill palms". Then I saw the price. It was a mind boggiling 100+ dollars. Then I went on ebay and got 2 WP's for 5 dollars each :) I bought an enseste maurelli on ebay, another banana which I haven offically won yet, and a lemon tree at a local nursury within the last month or 2. Its hard not to give in to buying a tropical plant when you like the tropics so much. Its alot better than looking at some dull bare trees during the winter (but I must admit it looks pretty cool when snow coveres them). Good luck! |

I agree about e-bay-on the seventh day "god" created Palm Sunday! That's when I buy a lot of my palms,so they make it before Friday! Impulse purchases? Today I bought C.medullaris.D.antarctica and D.squarrosa! Tree ferns are so awesome! They grow fast and love cool rainy weather like we have been having, now I have something that does well in any weather. O/K/ so todays not Palm Sunday, howabout Fern Friday? There is a great website about Tree ferns-Cold hardy tree ferns page. If you love palms, you will also love Tree Ferns!

I looked into them a year ago and stopped for some reason, but might start again. They are really nice plants. Only problem is my yard doesnt get alot of shade but when theres a will, there's a way!

Don't want to hi-jack njoasis thread but there are many that actually enjoy/thrive in a sunny spot. Mike, I love Licuala,I wish I would have thought of making a little tent for mine(when it was still alive) like I am using for some of my bananas etc, that enjoy higher humidity. My place gets so dry in winter that the tropicals can really suffer...not anymore, even my Papaya is coming back inside the little tent and my tree fern is still putting out fronds! Njoasis- I would love to see a pic of that Saguaro
RE: Impulse purchases.

Jim I have mine on a radiator with a cookie sheet under it and I fill it with water every day or two. My orbicularis has pushed a half of a leaf out. njoasis definatley a coincidence.
RE: Impulse purchases.

A big sylvester date palm for 9.99 - It's a little out of my zone but I've got it up next to the house beside the dryer vent. We shall see.
RE: Impulse purchases.
| | |
Good luck with your sylvester palm. Eventually the standard cold tolerant palms leave you wanting something more. Especially in SC where people plant windmill palms, pindos, and sabals all over!

"Thax jim Ive kept the licuala grandis on the raditor and kept it wet and hot it likes it. Its pushing out a frond" Great idea! I love those palms, maybe I will try another in my"fancy"(-;) little tent, hehehe
RE: Impulse purchases.

Did you germinate the E horridus yourself? Where did you get your seeds? (I'm trying to reanimate a cycas siamensis silver corpse - uh caudex - myself.)
RE: Impulse purchases.

RE: Impulse purchases.

I bought this fishtail palm from HD for $35 it was originally about $100 its approx. 10'-12' tall to top of fronds.

^^ Nice fishtail, and a very reasonable price (actually mre like a bargin). I Also like that x-mas palm behind it. I always see x-mas palms around my nursuries and they are sold very large and cheaply, but they are a little too large for me to keep. They must be heavy to bring in too! Also I bought some more impulse plants recently. One plant is a Camellia Yudetide which has really nice red flowers from early october to thanksgiving, and in warmer climates from now to about christmas, or even though the entire winter. Im not sure if I should plant it now, or in the spring. Its cold tolerant to a zone 7, but it looks like this winter might be colder than the usual, and this is my first "fall blooming" camellia. I have another that blooms in the spring, and never has any probelms with it from cold weather. I also bought some spanish moss off the internet and should be getting that soon. It will probably be draped on a tree during the summer, and sitting on something (maybe a wire) for the winter. Good luck everyone |

I HAVE to show this thread to my partner, who thinks I am the only person with a serious plant habit. They are my drug of choice, with few if any negative social consequences, except maybe the expense. Gardening and collecting plants is quite the high, as evidenced by so many of us on the palm forum. And thanks, Jimhardy, for pointing out "Palm Sunday'--- and here I thought I bought most plants on Sunday because it was my day off. Happy buying. planting, and living with, everyone! DL
