there are literally hundreds of species of Cycad that would be OK for you... palms for pots that small would be a bit more difficult. Eventually nearly all palms that grow wide either will not grow in Palm Desert or will outgrow your pot... or tend to grow tall rather than wide. You could try a Nannorrhops or a Serenoa, though both like the desert climate so much they will eventually also outgrow your pot.. but they are wide palms and slow to get tall... even in Palm Desert...

How about a silver med palm? or silver/blue Armata?
