We have not had bad beach erosion here yet, but the winds are howlin' pretty hard, and the worst may be coming. Haven't cut down my basjoos ...now, I've got the reason. Hell, Mama Nature might beat me to the punch. Hold on down there.

It looks pretty bad down there. So far it not tpo bad over here, but the winds are sustained at about 25-30 mph especially by the coast. The worst for NJ and NYC will probably be later today.

I would say some of the gusts by my office building had to be 50+ around 10:55 am. The wind is stronger at certain times - not much rain today. A rain shower this morning was blasted around with leaves and sticks. I heard the shores amd beaches are getting battered - last nite they said cape may NJ was like a tropical cyclone with sustained winds of 40 mph and gusts to 60.

Yeah, VA Beach really took a nasty pounding. I have a friend down there, and he told me that lots of trees came down in his neighborhood about 5 blocks from the ocean, and that all along the ocean front there is some structural damage to buildings/ houses. They were even showing some of that on the weather channel, and estimating sustained winds around 55+ with gusts to hurricane force. His power went out for a while also, and there was lots of street flooding anywhere near any water. I know up here in Alexandria, VA we have gotten two straight days of sustained winds of 30+ with gusts to up near 50. The Potomac river has come up as well a couple times so far into the first block of streets in old town, but no real major flooding of business or residences so far. The Potomac sure was whippied up into a white cap frenzy tho with 2-3 foot waves crashing on shore and spraying everywhere especially when they hit the rocks. It reminded me of when Isabel hit here back in 2003 the way it looked, but that flooding was SEVERE and came up nearly 12 feet and causes MASSIVE flooding ( second highest water mark ever in Old Town Alexandria ever) and the winds back then were more along the range of 55-60 sustained with gusts to 80+, and LOTS more tree damage and some building damage on water front buildings. Seems to be calming some today. Winds are only around 25-30 and gusty still. NorIda has been a nasty storm in general for sure. I hope everyones plants and property is OK down in VB!

Yea been wanting to post a follow up but my internet, power and cable has been off for almost 2 days. Va Beach got hit HARD outta no where raining since wednesday non stop and still raining. very high winds approx avg. 35-40 with gusts about 75-80. trees are down everywhere due to the wet ground and strong winds obviously. flooding all over coastal areas, streets blocked everywhere from flooding and trees in the streets. slowly starting to get better. it seemed like the storm just sat on top of us for days and didn't move! I will try to go out and take a few pics als pics of my large trachyarpus fortunei down that are over 20'. Thanks all for the concerns! -Justin in Virginia Beach

Justin, I saw TWC footage and the wind and rain was tropical storm force. More warnings should have been posted. Growing up on Long Island I can appreciate that its usually worse when your actually there. The media really doesn't show you all the deatils of flooding etc... On Long Island, my dad accidently drove into a costal neighborhood where the water was 1-2 feet in the street. The car starter died. Hope your tracky is salvageable! Did it blow down all the way?

WOW! Hope you are all ok! Sorry to hear about your Trachy! Please post some pics if you can. We had a few trees down and lots of branches come down, and some minor street flooding, especially along the tidal potomac, but nothing major like you got. I hope you can salvage your Trachy! best of luck to you all down there.

Hey Everyone, I am finally able to post...What a storm we had here in VB!!! We lost power on and off...lost cable (Fios Bundle ) for 5 days due to all of the power lines down...Winds were Hurricane strenght on the bay...75+ gust. We lost large sections of the lynnhaven fishing pier...several restaurants on the bay...alot of structual damage to many homes along with the problems of flooding. I did take some pics...but I am not at home while I'm posting this message...so I'll get back to youall later...My palms did make it through the storm...even my potted ones on my deck!!! LOL they were the last of my plants that I left out before the storm...We all didn't think that it would be this bad...but with the remnants of Ida and the coastal low off of the carolinas...the perfect storm formed right off of the chesapeake bay...We all are still drying out and assessing all of the damage...We even had a huge barge wash up on the beach at Sandbridge... Justin...I will help you with your palms when I get back from this trip...I'm sure they will be OK... Thanks for all of your concerns for us... Laura in VB

Hi Laura, We're happy you made it thru the storm. Did the water over spill the docs in your mom's backyard? 75+ mph is really a bad storm, especailly for immediate shore which basically had a hurricane.

My "greenhouse" - a temporary structure build out of PVC pipe and 6 mil polyethylene - held on through the entire ordeal, although I did remove the main cover so that everything could have a nice big drink. I was also concerned that a large tree limb or something might fall on it and tear it. Turns out it did. A big limb crushed a huge pot that I had three bananas growing in, obliterating two of them ,although the third I think will survive. Other than a big mess and a lot of road flooding, everything I had (save the bananas) made it just fine. I spent all day yesterday cleaning up just my greenhouse. The rest of my yard will take at least a week. Brad in Chesapeake.

Hey Greg, My mom lives near the Chesapeake Bay...I had to rescue her from the Condo where she lives...water was all around her place and they lost power on and off...but a large pine tree crushed the main water line (Which is underground) so you can imagine how large the pine tree was!!! They had the water restored yesterday....That picture of the palms with her in the picture is my house...and yes the water did come over the bulkhead and caused alot of concern for our boat which was up on the boat lift ...it was already raised to the highest setting...we have been thru so many Hurricanes...Floyd...Fran, Gloria, Bonnie, Hugo...Isabel...etc...this was the worst as far as water and wind gust...My palms were untouched...they have been in the ground for along time...also they are not to close to the waters edge so that the north wind could have a time with them...It's like a wind tunnel comming down the canal...Sounds like you had some big gust up in Big Apple!!! Any windows or other damage up there? Brad...I'm glad you are ok in Chesapeake!!! I have a small greenhouse that I purchased from ebay...but I have been to busy to put it up...thank goodness because it would be somewhere inland...maybe in Suffolk or Franklin!!! LOL... Take Care everyone... Laura in VB |

Thanks for getting back to me and happy to hear your Mom was rescued. Thats the good thing about sabal palms - they are made to withstand strong hurricane force winds. NYC was spared from any big rain event which made the storm much less powerful deeper into the city. On Long Island, my dads car did have some damage when he drove to my Uncle's house by the bay and he realized he was driving in 1-2 feet of water. Tides were bad and wind - especially costal wind was surprisingly strong. Sustained at JFK airport 30-35 mph and gusts to 50 mph. Considering we were not suppose to see the storm due to a high pressure ridge, that was a big surprise that lasted 2-3 days.
