It's a great looking palm (hate to ask what those cost out wherever you are)... no way will live in zone 4 without a LOT of protection.. .do your best!

Amazing palm! Where did you get it from? I'm hoping to head to cali this summer and if I do, I'll definitely be bringing a brahea back (not as big as yours though!)

With any luck it will grow a little slower and not be such a beast to protect-although,thats not a bad problem to have.

curious to know where zone 4 is...sounds like you are REALLY pushing it with palms! like me trying to grow a sequoia down here.

Thanks guys... I bought it at "Plant World" nursery in Las Vegas. It's a HUGE nursery. I live in extreme northern Utah in a beautiful mountain valley called "Cache Valley". Logan is the largest town in Cache Valley. I live in the bottom of the valley where the coldest air sinks to in winter. I've seen -45 F. before at my home. -30 F. is not that uncommon. -25 F. is quite common. On a warm winter, we're glad to have it drop no lower than -20 F!

Man...your house must be well insulated,how do you keep it warm on a night like that?
I have seen around -18F here and about the same in St.Louis in the early 80s....even
when it gets to 10F here it is hard to heat this old and poorly insulated
house.

Hi Jim. Our house is not insulated any different than any other house. Now we have a very efficient furnace, so our gas bill isn't too horribly high during winter. But back when it got that cold our furnace ran all night. We have an A-frame house, and the night that it got to -45 degrees we didn't sleep the entire night because our entire house kept making loud popping noises from the contraction of wooden structure.
