Thanks for the update Joey, that looks stunning. If it were me, since it is only one tender palm to protect, I would take extensive measures to keep it alive and healthy for as long as possible. You could build a makeshift pvc and plastic structure around it, easily adding to the height of the structure as the palm grows (would need to secure it well though). You could also aim a dish heater at it just to keep the palm above freezing during the ~30 nights a year(?) below freezing in your area. There is a guy on another plant-related forum who has trunking Cocos growing at an angle under plastic in MS.

I have already protected it with extreme measures. I have used two different PVC greenhouses and even a more elaborate wood frame greenhouse (see thread from about this time last year called "Royal Protection"). It's just getting too big!!!

Now as far as the guy in MS who has the coco in the ground...I would really be shocked if that were true. I've had the before. They require a higher soil temp than what we have in the winter here. Whatever protection means used above ground would probably have minimal to no effect on the soil temps???

Protect in one more winter-then root prune it every spring thereafter. See if you can keep to a manageable 6-10' of trunk..for decades. Use Bonsai techniques..

Very nice Royal. I would totally protect it, I think once late February arrives this palm is safe. I wouldn't recommend applying Bonsai techniques to a palm since this is not the nature of them, especially giant Royals. They need all the fronds they can get in order to thrive. Protect it this winter if you can and good luck. :)

Wow that is some comeback! And a super fast growing palm too. After this winter, maybe just try wrapping the trunk with christmas lights and burlap. If the fronds freeze, maybe it'll still push out enough fronds to recover during the rest of the year. I've heard of this working with Washingtonias.
