| here's a really old Encephalartos altensteinii... about 12' of trunk or more. |

RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| Here's something you don't' see every day... a mature Encephalartos middleburgensis in full cone. |

RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| nice Encephalartos longifolius |

RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| another one you don't see every day... Encephalartos hirsutis (not sure if that's spelled right) |

RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| nice little Encephalartos latifrons for sale... sigh. |

RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| great pics! those are some great specimens. how much are they selling that Encephalartos latifrons for? |
RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| no idea... if you have to ask, you can't afford it is my guess |

| Eric You can buy a small one .75" caudex for $750 And for only $1750 you won't have to mess with the tiny .75" one because these whoppers are 1.75" Here is some quick but bad math-10" caudex-as pictured $17,500..they don't say anything about the height of the caudex but if that is factored in,well-you don't want to know. I wonder if you offered $10,000 for it if they would say- no thanks

RE: cycad garden visit

| Definitely not interested in buying, just curious what they go for. 17,000 could be better spent elsewhere in my opinion lol. Besides i would be afraid of people digging it up and stealing it out of my yard. |

| I love the look of the large trunked cycads but I just don't have the climate or the patience for it. They remind me alot of taz. tree ferns..which I still don't have either..sigh.. nice pics where is this place? |
RE: cycad garden visit

| Very nice photos. Love all those cycads. I may even try another in ground next spring. But you better believe I ain't paying over 20$ for it. |
RE: cycad garden visit

| That Dioon spinulosum is amazing. I have small ones that don't have a trunk yet. |
RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| I got a deal on this one....only $180-LOL
It has grown 7 leaves in 2 years-could be considered an investment as I am sure it will sell for big $$$ in a few more years-if needed but I will be to attached by then(-: Eric What could be better to spend 17,500 on?(-; O.k. you could make your own greenhouse and fill it for that amount but you would not have that Cycad-LOL |

| Amazing. First time I've ever seen such things. |
RE: cycad garden visit

| It wont be long before Brad Pitt or a Rock star like Flea snaps up those cycads. |
RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| are Brad Pitt and Flea cycad collectors? |
RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| Pitt is big time. Flea had a Aloe,Pachypodium and cycads garden in a home that looked like a Castle. I think they recorded one album with Dave Navaro there...then Flea sold it. |
RE: cycad garden visit

| Not far from me there's a specialist cycad nursery. They sell all over the world. Huge cycads are sent off in shipping containers. I couldn't imaging paying tens of thousands for a single plant. A lot go to places like the Gulf States where money is no object. I've bought plants over $100 but it took a lot of soul (and wallet) searching, and a determined "don't think about it, just do it!" I might have champagne tastes in plants, but I'm restricted by a beer income. |
RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| My guess- and all it is- is that Pitt's travels to dry,hot Africa with his wife Angelina, piqued his interest in Cycads. I hear he has one of the best collections in the country. |
David Bowie and Brad Pitt
| | |
| The cone heads NY times Of course, owning just a single cycad doesn't count for much these days, not when people are putting in whole forests of them. Brad Pitt, for one, has a primeval-looking stand of more than 100 Cycas revoluta -- a fairly common species also known as sago palm -- in his lush Hollywood Hills garden. ''I planted a huge grove of them,'' says Jay Griffith, his landscape designer. ''And Brad flipped. He kept saying, 'I want more and more.' To me, they are most majestic when you plant gobs of them. You expect a triceratops to come around the corner and just gobble them up.'' |
RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| Ahhh, thanks Jim. I'm glad Pitt isn't one of those who are part of the pressure on wild plants. |
RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| I guess the landscaper thinks that a meat eater would switch to salad if it was a Cycad salad s: |
RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| Where is the garden on the pics? |
RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| Los Angeles, near a town called Eagle Rock |
RE: cycad garden visit
| | |
| Huh,David Bowie has a cycad collection too. Cycad's appeal to Ziggy Stardust? I can see why. |
