Updated pics of new protection method of 16' outdoor Trachy

I took several of your suggestions to heart and further protected my 16' Windmill palm.

Picture prior to added protection with two layers of bubblewrap with a heating cable in between each layer. Thermostat turns on the cable at 20 degrees and off at 30 degrees:

Picture after adding fiberglass insulation batting to the trunk, and covering everything with black plastic:

Who knows if it will survive being mummified all winter. Oh well, at least I tried!

Good call on adding extra protection. Better safe than sorry. That method does look much less complex than the styrofoam box method, hopefully it will work just as good or close to it. Good luck.

Sure hope it makes it through-the only issue I see
is that thermocube,if it stays below freezing for a long
time-at that temp range(20/30)may not allow it to ever
get above freezing.

We can pray for another mild winter though,right?

Hey Kevin looks great -temps for thermostat would be better from 28F-45F but an experiment is just that--- trying and waiting to see what happens. I am praying for you

Hi there , I am a palm enthusiast and have purchased windmills, needles and Sabal minors to plant in Newfoundland. I tried it 10 years ago but was over my head and didn’t know how to winter them etc. Bur we have oretty mild winters generally and cool damo summers.

I am hoping to connect with pioneers in this space. anyone out there ?

Good luck but the northernmost Windmills on the east coast to have lasted any significant amount of time are around Rehoboth Beach and Cape May NJ, and the only to have lasted a really long time around Virginia Beach and Hampton. So, roughly 1000 miles south of the southernmost point of Newfoundland! Even Martha's Vineyard has been below 0F, and quite recently, too.

St. John's average HIGH in winter is < 32F/0C. That's really going to suck the life out of even the hardiest palms. Years ago a guy in the mountains of Colorado did very scientific experiments on keeping Trachys alive and the time factor below freezing was a major player, along with seasonal record low. Because the palms can't be metabolically active below freezing.

Thanks ! i have seen them 20 feet tall in denmark… which is much further north than Maine. We are actually south of most of fhe canaidan border (the map is kinda mislleading).

Anyway, yes winters are typically hovwring around 30 +/- 5 degrees.
