Palms in December

Just thought I might post a photo of a garden with major palm plantings in a northern California setting on a December day. We're fortunate here that there is little need to worry about losing palms to freezes, although foliage can get a bit beat up in occasional years that it does dip down to perhaps 27F or so. This garden has mostly palms that are bullet-proof even in an 8b climate, and we are solidly 9b/10a here in the Berkeley hills area. I enjoyed putting these plants together for a serene tropical or perhaps Morroccan style garden. I probably used about 10 different species of palms throughout this entire garden, with the more tender ones in the front garden under protection of evergreen Coast Live Oak trees. Nice pic! I like birds of paradise in that pic for the tropical look because the foliage is so cold tolerant! The leaves still look good even after a freeze. I had one outside when temperatures went down to 25F and still no real damage. And I hear that when they are older, they can come back from the ground in temperatures as cold as 15F maybe less depending on how much you mulch them, but they are slow to come back from that kind of cold damage.

San Fran is a great place for tropicals because even though the weather is always cool, its rarely very cold in a freezing kind of way.

Nice pics neorider! Your front yard looks very palmy! I really like the mediterranean fan palm. Cant wait till mine gets to that height!
