The woody vine remnants are dead, but it should grow back from the roots, as long as the drought did not do it in last summer. I have had it come back for me in TN in late May, although it is not reliably hardy here. It may still be a little early to see new shoots coming up in Austin. It has never been a good bloomer for me, usually only producing a couple of flowers in late summer/early autumn.

I don't think p. Elizabeth would be more drought resistant--the Phoenicia parent doesn't have arid-climate parents. You'd be better off with a Texas native incarnata. I've found mine puts down roots much deeper than other passis, presumably for drought resistance. The native p. foetida var. gossypiifolia is a good alternative as well, as they grow wild all over south Texas (if you like pink flowers, that is). The other Texas native passis are all Decaloba types. I'm fascinated by them, but they don't have large, showy flowers, or edible fruit.
