Fertilizer Question

I'm sure this one has been asked a gillion times but when I did the serach I got lots of info however not much on fertilizer.

What kind of fertilizer works best?? What should the numbers be...like the 8-8-8?? I found something for tropicals and blooming plants but I can't recall the numbers.

I need to start feeding but just want to make sure I feed the correct way!

Peters 20-20-20 pr miracle gro 15-30-15 works fine..and you can't burn the plant with liquid soluable fertilizer.
