Self Fertile . . .

Several of the Passiflora species are not self-fertile. Does this mean that an individual flower can't fertilize itself, flowers from the same plant can't fertilize each other, flowers from different plants of the same species can't fertilize each other???

To restate in specific terms . . . I think I've seen that edulis is not self-fertile. If I have an edulis cultivar, can another plant of the same cultivar (be used to) fertilize it? Do I need another species for fertilization?

I know that a lot of interesting varieties come from crosses of different species, but right now I'm primarily interested in what I need plant-wise to get good fruit.

Thanks,

Dave
