Maypop troubles

Problem . I bought 2 bare root maypops online and planted. At the time they were single roots sort of hairy like with a little dead stem. I planted them in a big pot. I came home today and my dog had turned the pot over and dug out the roots. I could not find anything that looked like the roots that I had planted before. I did find several little root pieces about in inch long that looked separated in nature and not part of a single plant that was broken or chewed. I'm just wondering would maypops divide like this before it comes out? I replanted them (about 5 or 6 root pieces) that looked pretty healthy . I can't think of what else it could be. It's the only thing planted in the pot. Does this sound right to anyone?
