I see wild incarnata growing on some dry sands

And on some fairly sterile soil.

What do they prefer though? General distributional or habitat data mention streambanks or thereabouts. Most such habitats I view are too shady for maypops so I don't know how well they grow in moist fertile soils.

Mine are now on deep sands and are watered once a week or so. When I planted them I put a gallon of MiracleGrow solution (1 tablespoon/gal) around all but one and do note that it is not as dark green as the others.

Is it worth heavily mulching these plants with manure compost, or is just occasional light fertilization OK? Are they heavy feeders by reputation?
