Blue Crown or you guys tell me

Little bit of history. Picked up a passion flower at the nursery-not garden center but regular nursery. This plant was stuck way in the back of the passion flower section. No name on it whatsoever. So I had to have it. Had a couple of Amethsyt type buds on it-elongated/narrow w/a tinge of sort purple on ends, 3 fruit and a caterpillar. Buds fried between nursery, my office and home.

Developed new buds-totally different, round in appearance when first starting. Came home the other night it had bloomed. It was dusk when I pulled up, it looked white at first. Up close saw the NARROW blue coronas-much narrower and lighter in color than normal Blue Crown. Outside petals have more of a greenish tinge than the others. Leaves while in shape are otherwise different.

Pics probably don't do it justice at all. Mature leaves are generally much smaller (almost miniature) than the normal blue, they have red leaf stems not green and red leaf veins on the back, not green. Also leaves are lighter in color than my "normal" ones. Fruit are same as the normal blues tho so far. It's in a 5 gal. pot.

My guess is it's still in the blue crown family. But certainly different from any others I have ever owned. Unfortunately my little camera can't get close up or it really blurs, so this my best. Any help in "name that Caerulea" would be appreciated. Thanks.

Caerulea (blue Crown) is a very variable creature. Many of us have grown it from seed and there are many selections of it. One called P. caerulea 'Chinensis' looks quite similar to yours with the wider white band in the corona filaments and paler blue leaves. Caerulea can also sometimes produce totally different flowers on one plant.

Thank you for your input Passionflow. I kinda figured it is a form of Blue Crown. Or that a blue crown was crossed w/something else and it was the stronger one. The leaves are just so different. I have an Allspice that produced 2 (at least to my novice eyes) different flowers.

Except for the 3rd one down, that's definately a caerulea.
The third pic tho looks like a caerulea held up in front of a quadrangularis or 'ruby glow'... In fact, given about 10 minutes to move my ruby glow over by my caerulea (and granted a blooming caerulea, mine isn't at the moment) I betcha I could recreate that pic. Are those really it's leaves? If they are, I'd be suspect of that one... But all the others, yeah, that's caerulea. ("blue-crown" to it's friends)

The leaves vary with the age of the plant & where they are- I've noticed the 'fingers' tend to get thinner out toward the end of the vine.

There's also some variance between the flowers, often hard to see unless one from each plant is held next to the other. I have one from southern california who has 3" flowers, and one I bought here locally with 2" flowers. They look almost exactly the same, with the smaller one's corona being a bit lighter.. Just looking at the leaves tho I can tell no difference between the plants.

Lots of variance in this particular plant.
