Passiflora parritae

Hi All

Re the mentions in the Incense/incarnata thread of Passiflora parritae possibly being extinct I think this very special Passiflora deserves it's own thread for a reply!

Passiflora parritae is indeed very rare but we are not sure that it is totally extinct in the wild as some wild collected fruit were brought back from the right area a couple of years ago so it could still be out there. Not an easy place to visit though. Global warming is causing both plants and their pollinators to move higher and if they move up at different rates thay can lose each other. The probable pollinator of parritae is here

As other posters rightly say parritae is terribly fussy - within certain limits it is as tough as old boots but if it freezes or overheats it will topple very quickly. Experiments are being done with some success grafting it onto rootstocks that will help it cope with the heat better. Its own roots simply will not supply enough water quick enough.
