little black flies or gnats

Hi! I am wondering if anyone knows how to get rid of those little annoying black flies, or gnats. I am not really sure what they are, but after bringing some of my plants indoors, it seems I have a severe large and pesty flying black gnat issue swarming about the house. They fly up my nose when I'm breathing, and they seem to know how to really annoy in the worst ways. They will not die. Does anyone know what they are and how to kill them!

I expect they are fungus gnats. Check link below. I also find that watering from below helps plus covering the surface of the soil with a layer of dry sand.

thank you myles! I don't see any little tiny worm thingys or any little strands, and the flies appear a bit different. Nevertheless, I may be purchasing some of the predatory mites that the site suggested anyway. I did not know that they have predatory mites for indoors!! This is great news, thanx for the help : )
