How do you do it?

Many of my vines, being vines, are growing all over the place. Intertwined with each other.. Climbing all over everything.. It would be one thing if they didn't grab onto everything (like my kiwis for example) but every 1" to 4" they've got a hold on something else. Disentangling them can be Quite a project.

Hence my question to those of you who have been growing them for a while- What's your method (if any) of keeping them seperated?

Right now I have some wrapped around bamboo stakes and others twined on tomato cages- I'll let the vine go for a while, then go out and de-tangle them all & re-wrap the new parts around what's already there. If necessary cut off any extra lengths, maybe putting them in the cloning box.

Some I've seen in the stores are just tied to a stake & it looks like any excess length is simply trimmed.

I'm about to start the detangling process again as It's getting cold here & I *know* there's some who won't survive the winter if I don't bring them in soon.. But I have to make a list of everyone & look up their hardiness. This time I want to try & make it easier on myself for next time.

Suggestions?

I have a simple system which I have learnt from bitter experience of seasonal untangling.

I have loads in the ground on trellis against the house and just let them all grow into each other. I never try to untangle them. The more foliage there is the more they protect each other from the winter frosts. Any particular ones that are young or a bit less hardy I protect the first 3' with hessian.

Tender ones I grow in pots in places so that they can't touch their neighbours.

I try and be ginger with the ones that aren't as rampant growers (for me this includes Vitifolia) but for the insane ones (like Lavender Lady, which is in a 20" wide pot and has grown vines over 15' long!) I cut back to a reasonable length and wrap the remaining vine around the bamboo poles it is supposed to grow upon.

btw...L Lady is the only one I have not yet brought in for the season. Not having the time to do the necessary maintence is the reason why.

I'm up to 8 varieties, 6 indoors, one to join them and one that stays out (actually I now have 6 incarnata in hopes that at least one will return)

We grow passi's at work (wholesale greenhouse)in 4" pots and 8" baskets and since space is usually at a premium there we just clip the tendrils off that are reaching towards their neighbors. It doesn't seem to hurt the plant any and tames them for a little while, at least until new ones grow ;)
