The incense needs to come in. The incarnata should be fine in ground. I'm also in 7a and I think that everything was delayed this season.

The incesne, I think, is unfortunately dead. I will leave the incarnata in the ground and hope for better luck next season.

Are your vines in full sun? Incarnata likes lots of heat, so I would guess the late emergence is due to your soil taking too long to heat up in spring. Also, in areas where incarnata does not get enough summer heat, it tends to not survive the winters very well, even when mild. Assuming they are getting lots of sun, try covering them with black fabric in spring to heat the soil faster.

It also may depend on the source of your incarnata. I know it can get pretty hot in the summer in NYC, but if your vine is from the deep south, it will still get far less heat than it needs. You may want to try to get one from near the northern limit of its range, which would likely require less heat.

We had our winter weather late this year all over the east, especially the northeast, so that probably contributed to the delay. And it probably got cold enough to kill the 'Incense'.

The site gets good afternoon sun. I got the vine from brushwood Nursery which is in PA, but who knows where the plant was from. Maybe they will send me another Incense, since they said it would be hardy to Zone 7.

I, too, am in NYC. My Maypop is usually a "Junepop" but this year mine also stayed dormant until almost July. I had given it up for dead. This is the third year - the first was so-so, the second better and this year it's eating up the yard. Half a day sun at best due to a holly bush. Found a sucker about six feet from where I originally planted it. Hang in there, maybe next year will be your year for a nice vine.
