Incarnata (and incense) let me down!

I planted the incarnata in the ground last spring and it covered the entire wall, bloomed and produced a dozen fruit and died to the ground in winter.

This year it did not show up till late June when it grew some babies in the wrong spot and then in mid-July sprouted in the correct spot. Since then it has grown barely 6 ft tall and produced it's first flower only yesterday! What is the matter? It is not diseased, just stunted and late. I thought they could deal with Zone 5 and we are Zone 7a and had a relatively mild winter.

I also planted an incense at the same time which never showed up this year at all.

Should I be taking it indoors in the winter and bring it out earlier the next year, so it has a sort of a head start? I have potted several of the unwanted babies, and I could bring them in.
