What zone are you in and what varieties of passion vines do you have?

Hi Karyn,

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am in zone 7, Louisville, Ky. I have Caerulea, which the nursery told me I could plant outside, as they hardy to zone 6. But I am keeping them in pots so they will not get invasive in my yard. Can I put the Caerulea under my carport? I also have Incarnata in pots and can I overwinter them in a neighbor's garage ,and do I let them go dry or water occasionally?

Water them just enough to keep the roots alive. Make sure that they don't freeze because they are in pots. In the ground you don't have to worry about the roots freezing. I'd plant them in the yard if I were you. They might send out runners but they are easy to pull up. I wouldn't worry about them taking over. I'm also in zone 7 and I think the hardy varieties are pretty easy to keep under control. If you do decide to plant them in the yard wait until next spring. They won't have enough time to become established this late in the season.

That was helpful. I think I will just overwinter all of them in the garage and plant them outside in the spring.

I agree with Karyn---put them in the ground come spring. They'll perform a lot better, and while they WILL sucker, you can always trade those suckers for other things. (*grin*)

Carulea will survive outside rather easily- I've seen it 'going native' in Portland. I've one here that has taken a couple inches of snow twice & Mom has one that has come back after being buried under a couple feet. The root-ball is next to the wellhouse where the ground doesn't freeze.
