Lavender Lady Budding in Fluorescent Light!

Hi Everyone!

I purchased Passiflora Lavender Lady this summer in a little pot & brought it inside for the winter with my collection of houseplants. It finished opening the already developed buds then started spinning new secondary growth in all directions to my delight.

My conservatory (living room, hee hee) has only a couple obstructed east windows. To tide the plants through the winter, I have several (ugly Â in need of disguise) typical fluorescent shop lamps (2, 40-watt bulbs each) strung in pairs around the perimeter of the room. I use cheap contractor-10-pack bulbs from HD. I grow mostly foliage plants in this setting.

I had read that it was unlikely for passion flower to bloom in the house (in low light levels), butÂ my lovely Lavender Lady is showing flower bracts on the new growth. I just looked closely and can see that flowers are developing!! The biggest bud is about 3/4". Yippee!

I forgot to say that the lights are on timers, set to run about 17 hours.

I have several passion vines that are over wintered inside under HID lights and they'll bloom but the colors aren't nearly as vibrant as when they are outside. I only leave my lights on for 14 hrs a day. Even though the colors aren't as bright they are certainly pretty and it's just nice to have something blooming when everything outside is dead and brown.

Yes, IÂm happy for any blooming plants during the winter. I wish that the blooms would develop to maturity, but for now IÂm fascinated to watch the buds develop.

PP your LL buds should mature and open inside. I've found LL to be a very hardy variety as long as it doesn't freeze. I can pretty much ignore that one and it's still one of my best bloomers. I've also noticed that my purple and blue passies keep better color then the reds when blooming inside. My reds are more of a washed out pink when they bloom inside.
