Two questions about maypops

First, my maypop was in its second year this past summer. It did eventually develop a few beautiful flowers but I expected that by now the plant would have many "branches" and be full. It actually only had 2 vines that came up from the ground and the entire thing appeared to be dwarfed by the trelllis I put in for it. Will this plant eventually thicken and develop more "branches"?

Second, although we always have pretty hot summers in NY, this year it was 90 degrees and above from May until September. Still, my maypop didn't even appear untill the end of June or beginning of July. Would it be better to put it in a pot for next winter and then replant it in the spring? Thanks in advance for any advice.

At this point in the year I would definitely leave it alone. The ground is likely unworkable, even if it is not frozen.

Maypops frequently don't grow until June or early July. If you want greater growth from the plant, fertilize it and mulch it so it has sufficient water.
