The colors of (tree)Peonies, what they really mean, with pictures

For tree peony growers, their jargon colors are not what we usually think. This also applies to other plants, such as orchids. Now, here is a comprehensive list of colors for peonies with pictures showing what they really are.

(1) Red - this is the normal reddish purple.

TP "feng gong wei ji" è±ÂÃ¥ÂÂÃ¥ÂÂ績 (meaning great achievements)
This TP has a consistent and lovely "red" color.

(2) Black - this is the normal maroon.

TP "ye guang bei" å¤ÂÃ¥ÂÂæ¯ (meaning a type of drinking vessel that glows in dark, possibly made from jade)
This TP has a consistent and lovely "black" color.

(3) Pink - this is almost white with a washed out color.

TP "fen he" ç²Âè· (meaning pink lotus)
This TP demonstrates the very diluted color that forms the "pink".

(4) Blue - this is the famous "blue" - it is actually more pink than (3).

TP "da ban lan" 大åÂÂè (meaning big blue petals)
This TP has a pink color that is far more pronounced than (3). This is called "blue".

(5) Purple - this is less reddish purple if compared to (1)

TP "zi guan yu dai" ç´«å çÂÂ帶 (meaning purple hat and white belt)
This is a bi-colored TP. The base color is "purple". The center petals show many vibrantly shaped and white colored bands. This is an interesting cultivar.

(6) Light yellow - this is creamy, almost white with a washed out color.

TP "ju hua huang" èÂÂè±黠(meaning Chrysanthemum yellow)

This TP shows the "light yellow" which is a very diluted color on an almost white petal.

(7) White:

TP "bai zhang bing" ç¾ä¸Âå° (meaning a hundred feet of ice)
This TP has a transparent "white" color.

(8) Yellow - this is the color of lemon peels.

(9) Orange and multi-colored:

TP (above) "shan hai guan" 山海é (meaning refers to a gate on the Great Wall.)
This TP shows "purple", "blue" and "pink" on each petal. The colors transit in a smooth way.
