 o
peonies and temp requirements in southern California

I live in the Inland Empire of southern California. My last attempt at growing peonies was not successful. I really want to find a way to grow them here because my sister can give me 'babies' that were originally our grandmothers.

Though this is southern California, it can get somewhat cold in the winter. It might even get to freezing 1 - 2 nights a year. Last year we actually had about 2 weeks straight of night time freezing. During the day in the winter is not at all consistent. Today's high was 52. Last week we got up to the mid 70s in the day.

During the summer it is pretty hot here. We can easily have day time highs in the 100s for days at a time. At night, it might drop to 65 or so.

If I don't have the appropriate chilling requirements, can I do something like put ice cubes around the plants?
- thanks, Cecilia

You probably have enough chilling hours. Call your local county extension service and ask for the average chilling hours where you live. 400 hours is considered minimum for consistent blooming. You will need to plant herbaceous peonies high enough that the buds for next years stems are not buried and are visible during the winter. Al
