Selling Peonies in the Spring?

18 years ago

Hard to believe, but Spring is already around the corner here in NC. Wal-Mart has all their Spring stock put out: seeds, tuberous roots and some bulbs. I picked up a 3-pack of Sarah Bernhardt peonies for a mere $6.50. Granted, they're not huge but for that price they were hard to pass up. Others online sell 3 for $25 or so, and I imagine they're not much larger.

They have a few other varieties...Felix Crousse, Festiva Maxima + others in case you're interested. I still can't figure out why they carry them in the Spring when all mail-order companies wait to ship in the Fall.

Quick question: Since Peonies require an extensive chill period, should I plant these now to better acclimate them, or wait until this Spring when everything else prefers to be planted?

Thanks =)
