Red blooms the first year, and then pink therafter

I was talking with a friend yesterday. I remember her saying she had purchased a peony and the first season it had a red bloom, as she has expected.

The next season, and all the following years it has bloomed pink, and she said it is as big as a dinnerplate. I gotta see that!...and get a start.

Does anyone have any ideas about what may have happened? She is not the sort to try and pull my leg, and I really do believe that is what happened.

I believe what she bought was just a generic no name red peony in a pot from a local nursery.

Very simple, your friend had a "grafted" tree peony. Two possible problems as follows: The graft or desired portion died and now you have the flower from the root stock. Or, the rootstock sent out a sucker that grew taller than the grafted or desired portion, which in turn, the root stock sucker became dominent and killed the grafted or desired portion.
