Thinking of buying peony

Okay I have never had these flowers, and know nothing but before I buy, could anyone give me some information. I live in Southeast Georgia close to Florida. Do they like lots of sun, do they need a lot of water? I think the flowers are really beautiful, but wonder how much care they take. Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.

They like sunny well drained soil.

One major mistake made when planting them is they are planted too deeply, and then they don't bloom.

When planting them, the 'eyes' should be no more than about 1 inch below the surface.

Welcome to the wonderful world of peony gardening.

I know a lot of people would disagree with me but for a first time buyer go to walmart or one of the box stores like lowes or home depot and purchase an inexpensive plant normally sold in boxes. Find one that looks alive and heavy for the container. Sarah Bernhardt is a good one for the south.

THEN if you like the plant start looking around for more expensive ones. I am a cheap gardener rather than invest in an expensive plant that I may not like in a year or so I haunt the sales, buy the best looking one, plant it then if I like it I may then buy more.

A secret that many new gardeners do not know is that the plant in the gallon pot probably came from a two inch cell or smaller. The garden center may do this itself or they may purchase from a supplier. Either way you still pay for the time the plant is in the pot.

The only peonies in my garden NOT coming from those little bare roots by the box from costco or Home Depot are some that friends shared with me. If you buy them that way, plant them in one gallon pots for the first year, then into the garden. You should not expect blooms till year three. In your climate zone you should plant them so high the buds are visible all winter. They need at least 400 hours chilling and I think you will be on the edge. Good luck they are worth the trouble. A lady walking by my garden noticed the buds on my peonies and said"peonies don't grow here". I said "no they have to be planted". Her expression was priceless. Al

Thank you for all the help, I have been to Lowes this morning and they had peonies in gallon containers and then in bags. So I bought one of each. Wish me luck. I think I will need it. Thank you all again.
