Very carefully raise the stems that are left of last years growth and cut off just above the ground. The reason I say very carefully is that depending on the cultivar the new growth could be cut off if you just sheared everything off. bye-bye flowers. I mayself leave the stems until late winter. This said leaving the stems etc could increase the chances of fungial growth and or root rot in a very wet year.
