Peonies vs. Bermuda grass

ilaine

I had two raised beds side by side, adjacent. The one with roses became infested with Bermuda grass and the one with peonies did not. My thought is that the dense shade from the peonies stops Bermuda grass from spreading into that bed.

I have dug up the roses and transplanted them elsewhere.

If I plant peonies in the now-empty bed, will the shade kill the Bermuda grass, or do I need to totally eradicate the Bermuda grass before planting peonies in that bed?
