Old Peonies, will it gorw?

Hello,

I bought some bare-root Sarah Berhardt Peonies last spring (2006). In cleaning the basement I just found the bags. I opened them and found some sticks with a crown, all dark brown but flexible, not brittle.

Should i bother to try and grow these?

Try at this point you have nothing to lose but time. I would not take a lot of care just stick in ground where you can watch. If it is alive then you can move where you want.
It always helps to have an area to plant things when you are uncertain it they will fit in your garden.

If it does not bloom this spring you might remove some of the dirt it may be that it is planted too deep. Also it takes a while for a peony to become happy in its new place. You may want to give your plant some fertilizer just after the bloom time in your area. Something with the first number equal to or smaller than the rest.

Some growers intentionally leave one mature bloom size bud on each division so that the plant will flower the first year and if a problem is discovered, the wrong plant shipped, it can be solved quickly. Some peonies will not bloom for a couple of years after transplanting.

As for the ants peonies will bloom without ants. The ants that seem to come from no where to feed on the sweet nectar are actually already in the area. Ants are smart they don't travel miles for just a sweet. This said it is my opinion that if you do not have ants your soil will not be very healthy. Ants provide lots of benefits to the soil and do a lot of clean up of the surrounding area.
