squirrel damage?

While doing a bit of spring cleaning in the garden last weekend, I decided to poke around where I planted a peony in the fall - to see how it was doing. It was there and looked fine. I recovered it with soil. Then when I looked a few days later, it had been dug up and was sitting on top of the soil with several bites out of the main woody root. The eyes were not damaged. I replanted it and laid some chicken wire over the area.

I'm wondering if it is worth leaving it in the ground, or if I should plan to replace it. How likely is it to survive this kind of damage?

Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks!!!
