Transplanting & Dividing Peonies NOW??

I know the best time to transplant is in the Fall, however, I have the chance to get a bunch of peonies now. The people are moving & are not taking any with them, but offered any or all of them to me. I would love to have them, but am not sure about transplanting them now. They have buds on them, should I wait until after they bloom, or go ahead with it now? I'm not sure if they will bloom anyway because of the cold temps for the past 2 weeks.

Thx

Sooner is better than later.

Prepare in advance with compost the area where you want to plant them . Dig up as large a root ball as you can, pushing the dirt as you dig toward the root ball. Transport in burlap or pots. Once in place (don't plant deeply), water well. You may even get a bloom this year.

Several years ago I did an emergency end of May transplant with peonies that had buds, and they bloomed in June. I was thrilled!

Good luck,
Judye
