Stepped on new buds, now growing faster?

I planted a herbacious peony last fall and was pleased to see at least 5 red buds coming up. I accidentally stepped on the buds and they were "rumpled" but not broken. Almost like I rubbed them out of their tight little bud twirl. Within a few days those red buds on that particular new peony (and I planted 3 new peonies) shot up in growth. Now they are noticeably higher than the buds on the other peonies.

Did my stepping on them stimulate something, or is it a coincidence? I was more worried about having killed or damaged them that having stimulated them!

Thank you in advance!
