Plant them so that the "eyes" the fleshy part just above the root are about an inch from the soil line. Sprinkle a little - maybe a 1/2 to 3/4 cup of 12-12-12 dry fertilizer on the top soil; scratch it in gently and water.

If your soil structure is loose and humusy, water thoroughly with a 1 -2 gallons; if you soil structure is clayish, you may wish to amend the potting hole thoroughly before planting and then water thoroughly with the same amount but spread it out over a short period of time - , but be careful of overwatering - since the drainage in clay soils is slow.

Then let the spring warmth, rainfall, etc. take its course - just don't overwater.

Thanks Bill. I'll follow your advice and just leave the stems alone. One way or the other they probably wouldn't bloom this season anyway.

So long as you see them grow this season; they should be fine.

As for blooming this season,peonies will take 2 to 3 years before they will become mature enough to fully bloom.

So be patient!
