The wisdom is that it may take 5 or more years to bloom. Some mature earlier.

I'd be interested to know how you managed bloom so quickly--I'm patient, but my patience wears waiting for my own seedlings to mature enough to bloom. The only seedlings I've found to be precocious bloomers have been from P. ostii--just seem to mature faster, but they are rather underwhelming blooms.

Beginner's luck is best explanation.
This year's crop has been disappointing: a hundred seeds were collected last fall, only 17 plants have germinated.

Nothing wrong with beginner's luck! Just wish you could bottle it :)

Don't give up too quickly on your seeds--especially if they were dry when you planted them. They can take a couple of years to germinate with their wacky dormancy. I don't touch my seedling beds for at least 4 years to allow for the seedlings to grow a bit, but also to accommodate the late germinators.
