| Hi all. I'm planning on putting in a new bed devoted to peonies this fall but it's a long distance from the house and any water source.
How well will peonies fare with no supplemental irrigation? We do tend to have quite a bit of rain in the spring, often in to June but can also have periods of warm, dry, sunny weather (up into the 80's but usually only for relatively short spells). Has anyone had success with growing peonies without any additional water, and if so is flowering still good? Thanks for any input. |

| I watered a peony for the first time on April 20th. We hadn't had any appreciable precip since April 1st and I saw to my horror that Molly the Witch was wilting! Got out the hose and soaked it fast. That's the first time I've ever seen a peony wilt and the first time I've ever had to water one. Almost always they get along fine on what comes down from above - but should point out that our average precip is over 40" and our dry spells are usually in July/August when peonies aren't actively growing. Am happy to say that Molly made a fast recovery. |
