Congrats, graycrna4u, saved a beautiful tree peony and got a new herbaceous to boot!

That is incredible that the tree suffers no shock to what you did to it and even goes on to flower. I have read on another forum that when the herbaceous root is removed from a tree peony, the tree suffers and struggles for years. I guess it depends on the age of the tree, the variety, and the time of year that is done.

Actually, I have to admit after I saw the success of this project, I had a second TP with a herbaceous pips emerging and I did the same thing about 2 weeks later. And lo and behold, I got a second TP that is healthy and a new herbaceous peony. I guess luck has been on my side twice now.

Thank you for sharing this info. Should I ever have this problem I will attempt to do what you did. Was the grafting junction of the tree peony and herb root easily seen? And was it at this point that you sever the tree peony from its herb. root?

Once I took the plant from the ground, I rinsed the roots with a water hose and the herbaceous root will become obvious because of the pips growth. I didn't completely remove the herbaceous root, just the majority, then replanted the TPs deeper. There was still a small amount of herbaceous root on each TP.
