Spring planting?

Due to impatience I recently planted a tree peony, although I have read in several places that they should be planted in the fall. To make matters worse, I have no experience with tree peonies. As I understand, the reason for fall planting is to establish the roots before the large amount of leaves start growing, which would otherwise overwhelm new roots. Well, the reality is that my plant now has leaves. I wonder if I can prune the plant frequently during the spring and summer so the roots donÂt get overwhelmed. Anyone ever tried this? Or was this just a bad idea from the beginning?
