Deer and tree peonies?

Posted by thyme2dig NH 5 (My Page) on

Has anyone had deer nibble/eat their tree peonies? I'm curious because I have many deer, but my tree peonies are not really where they wander. However, I would like to plant more futher out on the property and wanted to make sure I wasn't just putting out a tasty (expensive) buffet for them. Any info is appreciated.

Most deer do not like tree peonies but will nibble if they are grazing in the area. My Alice Harding was nibbled a couple of weeks ago. They did leave the new growth.

A way that I have found to make the tips less desirable is to let the seed pod form and cut just below the pod. The leaf and pod stems dry stiffly and provide some protection from the deer. They feel the branches sticking their faces which seems to make the plants less desirable for feeding.

If the deer are over populated or starving nothing will help other than a cage of woven wire around each plant.

Deer constantly ate our tree peonies. We had to cage them. They would only nibble on Shima Nishiki but devour Rockii.

Try a product called "Liquid Fence". They will leave them alone!
