When should I divide an itoh peony?

This is my Keiko itoh peony which is just massive in it's 15 gallon pot with 14 stems, 3 of them woody stems, and is simply massive. When can these guys be divided with the least shock?

I'm thinking about dividing it directly after it finishes flowering so that it can have a few months to establish after being divided which has worked on herbaceous varieties, but I'm not sure if itoh peonies work the same way. I'm in upstate NY where it never gets hot in the summer anyways so when would be the best time to split this monster up?

Early fall is the best time. If you will divide it now, it could be too stressful for the plant - it might loose the foliage which is the important source for feeding your Peony during the growing season.

I guess that makes sense. Once they start becoming dormant by around September, I guess it sounds like a good time to split it up.
