Tree Peony Bark query

I have a tree peony, ÂHana-kisoi that was planted two springs ago. It appears to be thriving, doubling in size each year and it presently has at least a dozen flower buds. However, the bark on the trunk (now about 3/4 in in diameter) appears to be exfoliating. It's curling in patches. Is this normal for this variety, or is this a sign of a problem?
